Overview: Cold rolled steel has a favorable combination of strength, ductility, and ease of machining. Cold rolled carbon sheets are manufactured from hot rolled pickled coils by reducing to the ordered thickness, followed by annealing to recrystallize the grain structure. Cold rolled may be used for many exposed application but is susceptible to damage.
Process: The metal is moved through a series of rollers which provide uniformity in thickness of the metal and improve the surface smoothness. This process is done at room temperature. The steel is then reheated through an annealing process to achieve improved physical properties.
Typical Applications: Automobile parts, computer-cabinet hardware, tool boxes, shelving, lighting, exposed parts of metal furniture and many other manufactured parts. Cold rolled sheet steel can also be furnished in the full hard (non-annealed) condition or shaped corrected through a tension leveling process.
